Gabriel Meffre 2006 “Laurus” Gigondas

Gigondas, after Chateauneuf du Pape produces the richest wines in the Southern Rhone Valley and this Southern Rhone red is a real beauty. Sourced from old vine vineyards, hand-harvested and carefully destemmed before a slow maceration of up to 30 days. A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre and Cinsault. The Syrah is aged 14 months in 70-gallon French oak Laurus casks. The final blend shows hints of that spicy oak along with ripe fruit and exotic nuances. Wine Spectator scored this wine 91 points and said “Rich but racy, with a lovely black tea and warm cherry sauce perfume leading the way for juicy currant, fig and braised beef notes. Warm licorice and coffee frame the finish. Drink now through 2014.” Limited.
