Composition: 100% Shiraz
Region: Margaret River (Howard Park Leston Vineyard)
Technical Notes:
The Howard Park Leston wines carry the Howard Park label and therefore are sourced from only the highest regarded vineyards and are given extraordinary attention in the vineyard. Canopy management is designed to maximize fruit exposure to the sunlight and yields are low to achieve concentration in the grapes. The grapes are harvested according to flavour with little regard for analytical data, fermentation occurs in static stainless steel tanks with highly aerative pumpovers that are integral in tannin development. At completion of fermentation the Shiraz is pressed off into French oak barriques of which about 60% are new, the balance being 1 year old. The wine was matured in barrel for approximately 18 months. There was minimal fining and filtration performed.

Tasting Notes:
The 2005 Howard Park Leston Shiraz has a dense purple red appearance with high clarity. On the nose it shows predominantly primary fruits with rich, ripe plum and blueberry notes. An attractive lifted violet perfume is the distinctive vineyard character that runs through each vintage of this wine. On the palate the 2005 Leston Shiraz displays a very rich and plush profile with the soft fruit sweet mid palate showing red bonbon, Satsuma and underlying spice and vanillan oak. The wine is very youthful and juicy and with aging will develop more complexity.

Cellaring Notes Notes:
Medium term
5-8 years recommended

On wine and food pairings — to avoid.

Aromas of red plums and cranberries. Vanilla and cinnamon with undertones of dried cherry and a slight herbal note. Soft, velvety entry with subtle cherry fruit and plumy flavors. If I could use one word to describe this wine, it would be “smooth.” The mid-palate is soft, yet has a presence. A touch of dusty vanilla and spice. The finish is supple, but has some length to it. Try with a grilled pork tenderloin or spaghetti marinara.

Yellow, pale yellow with greenish tint
Ripe nectarine, melon, peach and pineapple fruit characters with nutty, creamy butterscotch characters. The malo complexity is balanced by the flinty, citrus finish.
Rich depth of stonefruit flavours are balanced by the fresh citrus and melon. The fruit integrates with the creamy oak to achieve a complex and full mouthfeel with persistent flavours and a very long, crisp, refreshing finish.
Food Marriage
This full bodied chardonnay will complement both chicken and creamy pasta dishes while the crisp citrus finish makes a great accompaniment to seafood.
